JOI: What We Tried, What Didn’t Land, and What It Taught Us
It was my birthday. We were in a hotel with ring lights set up and a night ahead of us with no agenda except each other.
We had talked about making a video together. My wife was not ready for that, and I was not going to push it. So I pivoted to something I had been thinking about for a while.
I had come across JOI over the years, Jerk Off Instruction, while watching porn. It is one of the most popular categories on OnlyFans. The format is usually a woman, though men do it too, who teases her viewer slowly, sometimes over ten or fifteen minutes. She reveals her body, describes what she is feeling, shows herself using toys, a vibrator, a dildo, a butt plug, and talks to the viewer about what she wants him to do. The point is to be so present, so specific, so unguarded about her own pleasure that the viewer cannot help but respond. The best ones are not graphic in a clinical way. They are intimate. They feel like someone letting you into something private.
I had watched Mrs. Poindexter, one of the most followed creators on OnlyFans, for years. She is a little sassy, genuinely playful, and she makes the format feel natural rather than performed. I found one of her videos where she was using a vibrator and instructing her viewer in exactly the way I had in mind. I showed it to my wife. She watched it, enjoyed it, and agreed to try it with me.
She said to me, "I think I can do that."
Why It’s Worth Trying
JOI is not just a porn category. It is one of the more psychologically interesting things two people in a long marriage can explore together.
To do it well requires something most of us spend years avoiding: genuine comfort in your own body, confidence in your sexuality, and the willingness to be fully seen while in a state of complete vulnerability. The person giving the instruction has to be present enough, unselfconscious enough, to seduce rather than perform. That asks more of a person than most intimate acts do.
There is also an element of control to it that connects directly to the dominance thread I wrote about in What Couples Get Wrong About Dominance and Submission. The person giving instruction holds the frame. They set the pace, the tone, the direction. Done well it is one of the more potent things two people can explore without props or elaborate setup. Just presence, voice, and attention.
It is also, practically speaking, one of the best tools a couple has when one or both partners travel for work. A video call, a voice note, a text exchange built around JOI keeps the connection alive across distance in a way that a generic goodnight message does not.
It is intimate, it is specific, and it reminds both partners that distance can be an aphrodisiac. For couples navigating the proximity paradox, JOI is one of the more useful tools available, a way to reintroduce the charge that separation creates.
This is something I will definitely be asking for again.
The Ritual
We went out for a nice dinner first. That is how we do it in hotels, we wrote about why in the Hotel Sex post. We build toward the evening rather than rushing at it.
When we returned to the hotel I stayed in the lobby, had a cocktail, and waited while she went upstairs. She took her gummy, got dressed in a sexy outfit, and set the mood. Getting ready takes her fifteen to thirty minutes, time enough for the gummy to begin taking effect. The cannabis ritual is something we have written about in the Cannabis post. When she was ready she texted me to come up.
When I walked back into the room I immediately grabbed her hand and looked her over from head to toe. She looked beautiful. She always does. I pulled her close, gave her a long embrace and a kiss, and ran my hand over her body, signaling my desire. Then I pulled a chair up next to the bed, unbuttoned my pants revealing myself, and signaled to my wife that I was ready. Ready to enjoy the image of her body and her sexuality being unleashed, and ready for her to control my pleasure.
That moment, the chair next to the bed, the ring lights, her in that outfit, me sitting down with intention and attention, is one of the more deliberately erotic things we have set up in our marriage. It was not spontaneous. It was constructed. And there is something about the deliberate framing of desire, this is what we are doing tonight, this is the space we are creating, that I find as arousing as anything that follows.
What Happened
She started. She revealed herself to me and began using the vibrator, I had handed her.
And then something shifted.
Having me watch her in that state of vulnerability triggered something protective in her. She stopped and told me she could not do this while I watched her. Not as a criticism of me or of the idea. Just as an honest statement about what her body was telling her in that moment.
I have been in this marriage long enough to know when to let something breathe. We pivoted. She asked me to photograph her instead, and the images we made that night were beautiful and have their own place in what we are building together. I will write more about that in a future post.
We talked briefly afterward. Something had been triggered but she could not quite articulate what. I did not press. I let it be.
What It Taught Us
The thing about trying new things, especially things that require this level of vulnerability, is that what doesn’t work is often more revealing than what does.
My wife stopped not because she did not want to give me what I was hoping for. She stopped because her nervous system had limits that night that neither of us could fully negotiate in the moment. That is not failure. That is information. It is the same thread I wrote about in The Debrief, the way a body’s response tells you something the conscious mind cannot yet say out loud.
My greatest desire for my wife is that she would be free. Free of the things that restrict her mind and her imagination. Free to own her pleasure without apology, to be fully present in her body without the weight of everything she was taught about what good women do and don’t do. When we crack the surface of that space, when she lets herself go there even briefly, it is a tremendous turn on for me. Not because of what she is doing. Because of what it means that she is doing it. Because I know what it costs her and she does it anyway.
We have made real progress toward that. There are still places where what we are trying bumps up against those old walls. That night was one of them.
What I Want Her to Know
I ask for things on birthdays and anniversaries that push the envelope. Not because I am trying to pressure her or because I am cataloguing what she will and won’t do. But because I believe in what we are building together. Because the hotel gives us a space outside of ordinary life where something different is possible. And because she has said yes more times than I deserve.
That night did not go the way I envisioned. It rarely does exactly. And I have learned, slowly, that the gap between what I envisioned and what actually happened is often where the best things are.
We had a beautiful night. She was beautiful. She is always beautiful. And I sat in that chair next to that bed and watched the woman I love try something for me that scared her a little, and I am still grateful for it.
These posts are love letters as much as they are anything else. This one more than most.
I love her so very much.
