Cock Rings and ED: A Practical Guide for Long Married Couples

I bought my first cock ring the same night I bought my wife her first vibrator.

That night is documented in the Anniversary Gift post, the visit to the sex store that changed something between us early on. I came back to the hotel with three things that evening: the vibrator, the cock ring, and a bottle of lube. The cock ring did not get shared with my wife that evening.

While she was still at her conference I tried it out on my own. I put it on and started to masturbate. It hurt like hell. My testicles were sore and I genuinely thought I might have permanently damaged myself. I put it away and tried not to think about what I had done to myself.

I was fine by the next morning. My testicles were not broken. My confidence in the idea was. But like most things my wife and I have tried, I came back to it. With a little more patience and a different approach, everything changed.

What a Cock Ring Actually Does

A cock ring restricts blood flow out of the penis and scrotum. The result is engorgement, more blood staying where it needs to be, which produces a firmer, fuller erection and a noticeably engorged scrotum. For men with reliable erections it adds sensation and stamina. For men dealing with ED it can be the difference between being able to participate fully in intimacy and not.

As I wrote about in ED: What Nobody Tells You and What Actually Helps, I have soft erections. The plumbing still works. I get aroused, I can ejaculate, but even with deep arousal I do not remain stiff enough to reliably enter my wife. The cock ring enhances what I have. It does not restore what I had. That distinction matters, and I want to be honest about it.

What it does do is give me more to work with, and give my wife something she has come to genuinely love.

How to Put It On Without Hurting Yourself

This is where I went wrong the first time and where most men will go wrong if nobody tells them.

Do not put a cock ring on while erect. Put it on flaccid.

The rings I use are stretchy silicone donut-style rings. The technique is to expand the ring fully with both hands first, stretching it open before it goes anywhere near your body. Then work it gently over your scrotum first, which is the most sensitive area and needs the most care. Once it clears your scrotum, position it at the base of your penis, nestled between your shaft and your testicles.

When it is in place correctly you will feel it immediately. The engorgement starts within seconds. Your testicles will fill and feel noticeably heavier. Your shaft will respond. If it is painful, it is either too tight or not positioned correctly. Take it off and try again.

The first time I tried this I went too fast and too rough. The second time I was patient with it. That made all the difference.

What to Buy and Where to Start

I use the Stay Hard brand by Blush. Available at most sex shops, around ten dollars a ring, reusable, and durable. I have three different styles and sizes and have only had one break after significant use. Low-tech, reliable, and at that price point there is very little reason not to try.

If you are buying your first cock ring, start with a larger diameter donut style. Give yourself room. A ring that is too tight on the first attempt is what sends most men to the drawer and keeps them there. Once you are comfortable with the sensation and understand how it works, you can experiment with tighter circumferences and different styles. I personally prefer a tighter fit now, but that took some trial and error to find.

If you are using Sildenafil or Tadalafil, the cock ring enhances the effect. I have used them together and the combination produces noticeably better results than either alone.

What It Has Done for Us

Here is the part of the cock ring conversation nobody else is having.

My wife almost always asks me to put it on. It has become part of our intimacy routine, and she will command me to get it on so that I can feel more pleasure. Because she loves what it does to my body and she loves playing with me when I am wearing it. The engorgement of my testicles is one of her favorite things. She will take her time with me, touching and exploring, and watching her pleasure herself while she does it is one of the most erotic experiences of our intimate life.

Let me be direct about that. Watching my wife touch herself while she plays with me, knowing that I am turning her on that much, that she is that aroused, is seriously hot. It makes her feel desired and it makes me feel like I am still fully present in our intimate life even when my body is not cooperating the way it once did.

That is something no medication has given me. The cock ring opened up a kind of mutual pleasure we had not found before.

She also genuinely loves watching me ejaculate. It makes her feel desired, knowing that she is the reason for it. We did not have that before. Two people fully present in each other's pleasure, watching and being watched. ED opened that door. The cock ring helped us walk through it.

If You Are on the Fence

If you are a man dealing with ED and you have not tried a cock ring, try one. Start with a larger donut style, go slowly, put it on flaccid, and be patient with yourself the first time. If it is uncomfortable, adjust. Come back to it.

If you are a man with reliable erections who is curious, try one anyway. The sensation is different and worth experiencing. Your partner may have thoughts about it you have not asked about yet.

Around ten dollars a ring. The upside is potentially significant. There is very little reason not to try.
